Maintaining habits is hard, and spaced repetition is a habit. It's hard to start a habit, and hard to maintain a habit. But unlike many habits, spaced repetition is one that penalizes you via piled up "due" cards if you ever miss a day, so once you start to get out of habit, it disincentivizes you from getting back in the habit.
