Explanation science is a phrase that keeps entering my verbal loop. I think there is a science of writing great explanations.

I think this page (which is written by me, admittedly) is a really good example of the kind of thing I am trying to point at with the phrase "explanation science": https://learning.subwiki.org/wiki/Examples_in_mathematics It examines the idea of "examples" closely and comes up with a typology, in such a way that someone who is writing an expository piece in math can use it to make sure they have all four kinds of examples.

Compared to other approaches to pedagogy, explanation science has more of an ethos of treating explanations as things we can get better at and discover new techniques in.
