Large graduating interval as a way to prevent pattern-matching
One problem with spaced repetition cards (especially cloze deletion cards) is that the brain just remembers the "shape" of a card without really internalizing the right cue. The knowledge is there in the brain, but it's being associated with just the visual shape of the card rather than the relevant "front side knowledge". I think having a large graduating interval might be one way to prevent this sort of pattern-matching. It's hard to pattern-match if you next see the card in 30 days for example.
