Like, they don't start out with a bunch of desiderata for what counts as "solving the problem"; instead, they just go along reading/thinking until it feels like the confusion they had is cleared up.

- A further complication for consciousness: when talking about why consciousness evolved, people sometimes confuse access consciousness with phenomenal consciousness. The evolution of the former is easy to explain but the latter is harder.
- Why does consciousness feel different from other cognitive reductions?
- I think the reason is that in the case of consciousness, even if we roughly implement a program that did things in the way the human brain supposedly does things (e.g. Cartesian Camcorder of Drescher), it would not correspond to our intuitive feeling of consciousness. Whereas with e.g. free will, we can see that even a simple chess-playing program has free will in the relevant sense.
- Another break down:

- Understand why evolution would build such a machine
- Understand how the machine makes the error
- Understand why evolution would build a machine that makes such an error

- There's also this thing (which happens in optical illusions also) where even after you see through the illusion, your mind can still "pop back in" to the ignorant state and feel the confusion over again. What's up with that? Luke Muehlhauser's consciousness report talks about this a bit.
